Lembeh is world-renowned for its exceptional muck diving, offering a truly unique underwater experience focused on rare and unusual marine life. The Lembeh Strait is a haven for macro enthusiasts and underwater photographers. It’s home to a staggering variety of critters such as flamboyant cuttlefish, hairy frogfish, blue-ringed octopus, mandarinfish, and countless species of nudibranchs. The typically calm waters and black sand slopes provide ideal conditions for spotting these camouflaged creatures, making Lembeh a dream destination for anyone passionate about marine biodiversity and fascinating macro life.
Most dive sites are just a few minutes away by boat from the resort, allowing for multiple dives daily, often with long bottom times and patient, expert guides who can seemingly spot a needle in a haystack! In addition to muck dive sites, there are occasional coral patches and wrecks, providing a diverse underwater landscape. Diver to dive guide ratios are kept small, ensuring personal attention and the best chance to discover hidden gems on every dive. Diving in Lembeh is unlike anywhere else.
For those wanting to experience more of North Sulawesi’s diving, a trip to Bunaken Marine Park is highly recommended. Located just a couple of hours away by car, Bunaken offers a stark contrast to Lembeh with its dramatic coral walls, crystal-clear water, and abundant pelagic life. Divers can expect to see reef sharks, turtles, schools of jacks, and vibrant coral gardens, making it an excellent add-on for guests seeking wide-angle diving in addition to macro.
The renowned Critters at Lembeh dive centre is onsite at Solitude Lembeh Resort. The centre is professionally run and well equipped, with high safety standards. They have a membrane Nitrox compressor, air purifiers, emergency O₂ tanks, VHF radios, and dive staff are trained in diver rescue procedures.
Ideal for underwater photographers, the centre has a spacious camera room with individual workstations, power outlets, rinse tanks, drying racks and often holds photo workshops. The centre can cater for all levels of divers and teaches a variety of PADI courses and specialities, from Discover Scuba to Divemaster.
Resort packages include 3 guided boat dives every day, with the dive boat returning to the resort between dives for refreshments and surface intervals. 3 large custom-built dive boats can each carry up to 6 divers and 2 dive guides and are fitted with sturdy benches, dive ladders, gear storage areas and safety kits.
Optional Mandarin (sunset), night, blackwater, and bonfire dives are also available, typically departing from the resort between 16:45–18:30. Dive groups are small, with a maximum of 4 divers per dive guide.
House Reef Access
Solitude Lembeh’s house reef is accessible directly from the resort’s private jetty and offers fantastic opportunities for both guided and unguided shore dives. Self-guided diving is allowed anytime, while guided dives are offered between 10am and 3pm, subject to surface interval rules. The house reef slopes from 2 to 15m depth and is home to lots of diverse life, from nudibranchs and frogfish to mandarin fish and blue-ringed octopus. Moonlight household dives are also an option during early evening to find the flamboyant mandarin fish.
