Located to the west of the more widely-known island of Sal, São Nicolau is truly Cape Verde’s hidden gem. An island where rugged mountain landscapes meet scenic villages, pristine beaches, and vibrant Atlantic waters teeming with marine life. This is a destination that blends outdoor adventure with authentic culture, far away from mass tourism.
Divers will enjoy the uncrowded dive sites, spectacular volcanic seascapes, and abundant marine life, from sharks and turtles to rays and schools of fish, making every dive memorable. The visibility underwater is generally excellent, often exceeding 20 metres, and the water temperature stays between 22°C and 27°C year-round. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced diver, the island’s unique underwater landscapes make it a must-visit destination. Diving is possible year-round, but the best conditions are from April to November when the water is warmest and visibility is at its peak. The winter months, from January to March, bring slightly cooler water temperatures and stronger winds but can still offer great diving experiences. Snorkelling is also an attractive option here as there are many sheltered bays along the coastline.
Dive Centre
Our dive centre partners sit just above the beach in a restored seaside house in Tarrafal de São Nicolau on the southwestern part of the island. As the island’s only dive centre, São Nicolau Diving blend local knowledge and charm with all the essentials for a smooth and professional experience. The team are true ocean lovers – committed to developing scuba diving and snorkelling on São Nicolau, and furthering marine conservation in the region. The dive sites are pristine and rarely visited, ensuring a personal and peaceful experience underwater. Diving focuses on exploration, with trips to volcanic reefs, dramatic drop-offs, and vibrant ecosystems not found in guidebooks.
Between dives, guests can relax in the ocean-view lounge or enjoy a fresh meal at the nearby restaurant. The team at the dive centre are also excellent hosts and proud to show off their amazing location. They can help arrange hiking and other activities. São Nicolau is a paradise for walkers offering fertile valleys, dramatic mountain ridges, and remote villages. In particular, the Monte Gordo National Park is a must-visit. The island’s highest peak offers marked trails, lush greenery, endemic plants, and spectacular panoramic views. A paradise for photographers.
